Venus’ Chicken Lazedaar

This is my SIL, Venus’ very own ‘Lazedaar’ Chicken – The name, she says, has been coined as this was her husband’s first word after he tasted this dish! Quite simply delicious.

PrepTime 3-4hrs – Serves 4-5 – CookTime 25mins

 

 

 

Ingredients :

Chicken – 1kg
For the marinade :
1. 400g Yoghurt
2. Garlic 3-4 medium flakes
3. Ginger 1inch
4. 1 green chilli (you could increase depending on your taste).
5. 1/2 an onion
6.Salt 1.5 tsp
7. Chili powder 1/4 tsp
for the gravy :
1. 3 onions medium
2. 1 flake ginger
3. 1/2 inch ginger
4. 1/4 tsp chilli powder(again you could modify according to your taste)
5.1/4 tsp Turmeric( haldi )
6. 1 tbsp coriander seeds (Dhaniya)
7.1/2 tsp cumin seeds(Jeera)
8. 4 cloves (laung)
9. 1 inch cinnamon (dalchini)
10. 2 black cardamom (elaichi)
11. 4 green cardamom (elaichi)
12. 2 tomatoes medium
13. salt to taste

Cooking Instructions:

Wash well and make dashes on the chicken, keep aside.Make the marinade by grinding to a paste, the marinade ingredients no 2-5, with a few tsps of yoghurt. Mix it with the rest of the Yoghurt and chili powder & salt. Add the chicken to the marinade and keep aside for 3-4 hours.

For the gravy:
Roast  the masala ingds no 6-11 on tawa separately and grind them together to a fine powder.
Add oil to a kadhai , add the ingredients no 1-3 chopped fine and fry till brown, add the ground masala powder , fry  for 1 minute , add the tomatoes ground to a paste and continue frying till oil separates then add the chilli powder , salt to taste & haldi. From the marinade add the Youghurt and fry till its dry , then add the chicken and fry a little. Add a cup of water , cover and cook approximately 40 minutes. Garnish with chopped coriander.
Optional :For a rich taste you could add 1/2 cup cream into the kadhai when chicken is done and stir for a few seconds (before serving).
