Gujarati Muthiyas

I had these yummies at a friend, Pooja’s place yesterday & HAD TO get the gist of the recipe from her, come home to research it & try it out – its THAT good! Nutritious, easy & de-li-ci-OH!!! Gotta try this, y’all!

PrepTime 5mins – Serves 5 – CookTime 35mins




3/4 cup gram flour
1.5 cup wheat flour (or 3/4th cups of wheat & bajra flours)
1/2 cup 1 finely chopped small onion, bottle gourd or carrot
6 Crushed green chilli
2 Inch ginger, crushed
3-4  crushed cloves garlic (optional)
1 tsp cumin pwd
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
1/2 tsp turmeric pwd
1 tsp ajwain (can replace with cumin/ jeera)
1 pinch hing/ asafoetida
6 tbsp Oil
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/2 cup chopped fresh coriander
Sugar & salt to taste

Cooking Instructions:

Combine the flours, chillies, garlic, ginger, salt, sugar, spices (except ajmain/cumin seeds & asafoteida/hing & finely chopped onions/vegs. Knead with some water to a soft dough (not too sticky & wet). Shape into 1″ thick rolls & align in a steamer. Steam for 25 mins or until cooked. Cool & cut into 1/2″ thick coins.

Heat oil & add the hing & cumin/ajwain. Stir for 10-15secs & add the muthiya pieces. Fry well till golden-brown & drain out the excess oil on paper towels. Arrange on a serving plate & garnich with coriander & coconut.
