Prem’s Mangalore Buns (Banana Puris)

This is a recipe my brother-in-law Prem recently introduced to me. He’s from Mangalore, India – where they make this with pumpkin as well. Its very popular with the ‘Konkan’ people & is sometimes called ‘Mangalore Buns’ instead of ‘Banana Puris’.



PrepTime 10mins – Serves 4 – CookTime 15mins





1/2 cup over riped mashed bananas
2 tbsp sugar (or more if you likeĀ  it more sweet)
2 tbsp yogurt
1/8 tsp baking soda
1 and 1/2 cups to 2 cups wheat flour (traditionally maida is used)
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (optional)
1/4 tsp pepper powder or a pinch of ajwain(optional)


Cooking Instructions:

Add sugar, salt, cumin seeds, pepper/ajwain, soda and yogurt to mashed bananas. Mix well.
Add wheat flour and mix to make dough. The amount of flour specified is approximate, add enough to make a stiff dough.
Cover it and leave for about 2-3 hrs.
Heat oil.
Take small balls of dough and roll into small puris. Deep fry. (You can even bake them like cookies)
Drain out the excess oil by placing them of paper towels. Serve hot with some peanut chutney.
