Beetroot Bhaaji

There was a Food & Groceries store outside my building in India & they made this dish I’d never tasted before & I carry a delicious memory of it even today, over 10yrs since I last had it there. Give this easy, quick one a try!




PrepTime 10mins – CookTime 10mins – Serves 4



4 medium sizde beetroots – cubed.
1 small onion – chopped
1 green chili – chopped
1 sprig curry leaves
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
2 tbsp dessicated coconut (or freshly grated)
6 cloves garlic – crushed
salt to taste
1/4 tsp cumin pwd
1/4 tsp pepper pwd
1/4 tsp turmeric pwd
2 tbsp oil/ ghee

Cooking Instructions

1. In a pressure cooker (or not-stick deep pan), fry the onions in the oil until light brown & soft.
2. Add the garlic, mustard seeds, green chilies & curry leaves and fry well.
3. Add the spice powders & continue to fry until the raw spice smell fades away.
4. Add the beetroot & salt and fry well, stirring, for a minute.
5. Add 1/4 cup water, cover & cook for a whistle on high heat (or until done).
6. Toss in the coconut, stir well & serve hot with rotis or daal-rice.
