Meatball pulav/ biryani

A delectable mix of rice & meatballs, tossed together with a spicy tomato-onion based gravy, that proves that meatballs don’t belong only in spaghetti!

 

 

 

PrepTime 15mins – CookTime 30mins – Serves 3

 

Ingredients:
1. 1/2kg or 1lb minced meat
2. 1 tsp garlic-ginger paste
3. salt & pepper to taste
4. 1/2 tsp each of haldi/turmeric pwd, garam masala (all spice) pwd n coriander pwd
5. 1 finely chopped green chili or 1/2 tsp red chili pwd
6. optional 1 tsp vinegar
7. 1 medium onion – finely chopped/ minced
8. 2 large chopped onions
9. 2-3 red dried chilies
10. 1 half-inch cinnamon stick
11. 3 large ripe tomatoes – chopped
12. salt to taste
13. 1/2 tsp pepper pwd
14. 1/2 tsp cumin pwd
15. 2 tbsp ghee/ clarified butter
16. 1.5 cups rice
17. 2 bayleaves
18. hot sauce/ soya sauce (optional)
19. salt and lime as reqd.
20. chopped coriander
21. nuts and raisins if reqd.


Cooking Instructions:

1. For the meatballs, mix ingredients 1 to 7 above and make 1″ meat balls with the mixture – pressing tightly in your palm n then shaping. Set aside.

2. For the gravy, fry ingredients 8 to 14 above in 1tbsp oil in a pressure cooker in the order listed, frying well after adding each item.

3. Cook till tomatoes soften, then add 3 cups water (if you’re cooking 1.5 cups rice enough for 2-3 people) and the meatballs.

4. Close and cook for 1 whistle in the pressure cooker or until the meat is cooked (not overcooked else they will break in the rice).

5. Wash the rice & add ALL the stuff from the cooker (the tomato-onion mix, water n floating spices – EVERYTHING other than the actual meat balls).

6. Cook the rice in this liquid – let it boil and let it settle into the rice. Then cover n simmer – you can drizzle fresh water if reqd – check from time to time until rice grains are cooked. Then, open simmer until its dry.

7. Toss in the meat balls. (Optional: Drizzle hot sauce/ soya sauce).

8. Taste and add salt and lime as reqd.

9. Add chopped coriander, cover & toss well. Simmer for 2-3 mins.

 

VOILA!!! It not only looks good, it tastes good too.
